The EPD (Environmental Product Declaration) is a type III environmental label aimed at providing scientifically based, verified and comparable information on the environmental performance of products in different categories. It is based on a lifecycle assessment (LCA) of the product in question, and provides quantitative data on the environmental performance of the product.
The “International EPD System” was launched in early 2008 as a revision of other EPD programs that have been in use for almost a decade in different European and Asian countries. The RH Ambio, RH Extend 120 and RH Logic 400 are the first office chairs to receive pre-certification according to the International EPD System.
RH Chairs’ EPDs are based on an LCA performed by IVL Swedish Environmental Research Institute, which presents the environmental performance of the products according to the following impact categories:
- Resource use
- Global warming potential
- Acidification potential
- Ozone depletion potential
- Photochemical oxidant formation
- Eutrophication
- Generation of waste (hazardous and non-hazardous)
Data was gathered internally, from published data and from questionnaires distributed to suppliers. The evaluation was verified by a third party to ensure compliance with ISO 14025, allowing it to be used for external communication purposes.

Our view of the environment
Our goal is that our chairs are as good for the body as they are kind to the environment. That is why all our chairs are 100% recyclable. Many of the components are made from recycled materials. Even our new Ventec™ product is completely recyclable. Our manufacturing process also takes energy consumption into account – plus, when your RH chair has come to the end of its working life, it can be returned to us for recycling.
